Getting the Big Picture

How grateful we are for the Word of God, the Scriptures, and the Bible.  Within it we have one account or story after another telling us of God’s workings among His People Israel, culminating in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.  The great majority of the time when we study the Bible we focus on a certain event, a particular teaching, such as the Passover or the individual parables or particular miracles.  Almost always we put on our magnifying glasses to examine a very small portion of Scripture.  Usually sermons do the same.  Seldom if ever do we stand back and take a look at the big picture that is, how all these individual stories and events make up the grand scheme of things in God’s view, how throughout history from beginning to end God has an all-encompassing plan to rescue His children and His entire creation.  You can’t get any bigger than that!

The Bible course that we have just begun on Sunday morning seeks to address the need to get the big picture.  I’m very excited about teaching it.  The title of the course is “See through the Scriptures,” authored by Dr. Harry Wendt, and Australian Lutheran.  He has spoken at several of our conferences throughout the years and is a highly respected theologian.  Though a theologian of keen intellect, he communicates complex ideas plainly and simply for all of us to understand.  Dr. Wendt has also incorporated many visuals to help us remember.

The reason I’m sharing this with you is to encourage you to consider becoming part of the Sunday morning class.   The cost of the materials is $15 which includes a study manual, a workbook, and a laminated detailed time-line of Biblical history.

For your information, my style of teaching is presenting ideas followed by class discussion, not just lecturing.  Through discussion, we learn from each other as the Spirit works in the hearts of believers.  Through discussion I personally grow in my understanding and faith.

So, whoever you are, think about joining.  I’m confident you won’t be disappointed.  In the end you’ll see how God has this huge plan right from the beginning and throughout all of time.  Best of all, you’re a part of it!  If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask me.

Moving operations get under way this week at 101-year-old St. John Lutheran Church, 4386 Mayfield Rd., South Euclid.  Because the building foundation has been weakened, the church will be moved back 75 feet and connected to the church school. The suburb's Plan Commission last week gave approval to an enlargement of the parking area. Parsonage also will be moved.  (clevelandmemory.org)

With the organization of the South Euclid Fire Department in 1922 came a change in the method of giving alarm in case of fire. For many the church bell of St. John Lutheran Church served as a fire warning signal and was followed by the use of a steam whistle installed at the Prasse Basket Factory. Later on May 17, 1923, a real fire siren was placed in operation at the Town Hall.   (City of South Euclid)
